'To All The Boys I've Loved Before' Sequel To Be First Collaboration In Recent Paramount/Netflix Deal

Earlier this year, Netflix struck a chord with rom-com fans all around the world with its film “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.” The film, which focused on a young teen girl and her budding romantic relationships with teen boys, was a breakout hit and became a bit of a phenomenon. And now, as if the upcoming sequel wasn’t going to be hyped up enough, it appears that the Lana Condor and Noah Centineo-led sequel will signal the first big project in the Paramount/Netflix agreement.

According to THR, the deal that Paramount and Netflix struck recently, which means the Hollywood studio would produce a slate of exclusive films for the streamer, will kick off with the ‘To All the Boys’ sequel. The original film was produced by Awesomeness, which was recently bought out by Viacom, and while that banner will be attached to the sequel, ‘To All the Boys 2’ will most likely be produced by Paramount.

As mentioned, the news is less about a sequel to one of Netflix’s biggest original films, but instead, a sign of what’s to come with this unprecedented deal between the streaming service and Paramount. The two companies have previously worked together, but mainly in the buyer/seller capacity, with the studio selling Netflix the distribution rights to films that Paramount deemed as box office risks, such as “The Cloverfield Paradox” and “Annihilation.” They also struck a deal over Martin Scorsese’sThe Irishman,” which Paramount was to produce and distribute, but was sold to Netflix during production, as costs ballooned well over $100 million.

Now, Paramount is relegated to being a production company for Netflix, and signals to what the future might look like for the major studios outside of the big guns like Disney and Warner Bros. Just a few years ago, Paramount was right up there with those Big 2, but diminishing returns on its “Transformers” franchise and a lack of another franchise to pick up the slack has led the studio to look at more non-traditional means to make money.

As for those more concerned with the “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” sequel, the film should be based on the next book in the popular YA novel series by author Jenny Han. The sequel, titled “P.S. I Still Love You,” was released in 2015.

No word on a release date for the sequel film, but all eyes will be on it to see just how this new Paramount/Netflix deal will look like in the future.
