If you’re a fan of the Oscars, you are probably very familiar with the tradition that surrounds the presenters chosen for the acting awards. As has been the case in previous years, the actors who won an Oscar last year are invited back to hand out the acting trophies to the winners the following year. However, with ABC desperate to draw attention to this year’s awards telecast, it has been reported that the 2018 winners will not be back to present this year. And for last year’s Best Supporting Actress winner Allison Janney, it’s terrible news.
In a now-deleted Instagram post (via Vanity Fair), a fan of the actress posted a comment about being excited to see what dress Janney wears during the telecast while she presents. The actress, in a moment of brutal honesty, posted a reply.
“It’s looking like they are not going to honor the tradition this year,” she wrote. “It breaks my heart.”

It’s a little ridiculous to think that ratings will be affected in any way by having the winners from last year invited back to present this year. However, the suits over at ABC, who in fairness are probably much smarter than this writer when it comes to this stuff, have decided it’s more important to have the biggest possible names. Which means Janney, along with last year’s winners Sam Rockwell, Gary Oldman, and Frances McDormand (who had the biggest moment of last year’s ceremony), will not be on the stage to present.
We’ll just have to see who ABC and the Academy chose to present the awards when the Oscars airs on February 24.
