It would appear that one actress dropping out of “The Dropout” has opened the door for an Oscar nominee to take her place.
According to Variety, Amanda Seyfried is taking over for Kate McKinnon in the upcoming Hulu drama series, “The Dropout.” The series is inspired by the real-life business scandal involving Elizabeth Holmes and her biotech start-up Theranos. The series will tell the story about the enigmatic founder and supposed business genius as she goes from being the next Steve Jobs to one of the most humiliated business leaders of the last decade, as her billion-dollar company completely falls apart.

In addition to her recent Oscar-nominated role in “Mank,” Seyfried is probably best known for her film work in features such as “Mean Girls,” “Mamma Mia,” “Les Miserables,” and “Dear John.” As far as TV goes, the actress has already appeared in a number of small-screen projects including “Big Love” and “Twin Peaks: The Return.”
As mentioned, Seyfried takes over for Kate McKinnon, who was originally supposed to star as the Theranos executive. However, the ‘SNL’ star dropped out of the project back in February, leaving the starring role up for grabs. Though it would have been very interesting to see McKinnon take on the role of Elizabeth Holmes, considering the actress is known for her comedy, you have to admit that Seyfried might actually be a better fit for the role. Regardless, Hulu really was able to nab a quality star to lead the highly-anticipated series.
“The Dropout” is based on the podcast of the same name. The new Hulu series is executive produced and showrun by Elizabeth Meriwether. No production start date has been revealed, though, at this point, it doesn’t look like we will see this project show up on the streamer until 2022.
