Amber Heard Says She's "Allergic To Being The Damsel" And Explains Why She Chose 'Aquaman'

It feels like we’ve been talking about “Aquaman” for years now. And that’s probably because we have been. Way back in 2014, it was announced that Jason Momoa had signed on to play the titular superhero and that he would not only appear in a couple team-up films but also his very own solo adventure. Since then, we’ve been waiting…and waiting. But it appears that everything is on schedule for the film to debut in December.

One of the stars of the film, other than Momoa, is Amber Heard. The actress has yet to venture into the world of superheroes and big-budget spectacle films until now. Apparently, that’s for good reason. Because according to Heard, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly (via Comicbook.com), she just isn’t interested in “damsel in distress” roles. And that’s exactly what Zack Snyder used to convince her to play Mera in the DCEU.

“I’m allergic to being the damsel, the two-dimensional archetype of what women are often limited to in this industry, especially in the superhero world,” Heard said. “Zack got me at ‘warrior queen.’ He said, ‘You get a sword and a crown,’ and I’m like, ‘Okay.’”

We’ve already seen a bit of Mera in action, being a badass herself, in the recent “Justice League” film. Unfortunately, due to that film being packed with character introductions and action, she wasn’t given much room for characterization. However, in the upcoming “Aquaman,” it appears that her and Momoa are leading the way.

It’s also been announced via Twitter that the first trailer for “Aquaman” will hit during San Diego Comic-Con. With Marvel and other major studios pulling out of this year’s event, it’s never been a better time for Warner Bros. and DC to steal the show and perhaps the trailer will be their ticket to doing that.

“Aquaman” will hit theaters December 21.
