We tend to forget, now that the streaming service has a plethora of original series, that Netflix really started to hit its stride with original content thanks to “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black.” The latter of those series is the brainchild of “Weeds” creator Jenji Kohan, who has gone on to help spearhead another Netflix hit, “GLOW.” Now, she lends her creativity (and all-important name) to the upcoming series “American Princess.”

“American Princess,” as the name suggests, is about an American socialite (we don’t have princesses, silly) who falls on hard times and has to take a job at a Renaissance Fair. And as you might expect from decades worth of fiction, Ren Fairs are prime locations for wackiness and hijinks. And surprise, surprise, Kohan’s latest comedy series pokes a lot of fun at those that work at these corset-filled festivals.
The series stars newcomer Georgia Flood, alongside a lot of “Hey, I know that person!” actors like Lucas Neff, Seana Kofoed, Mary Hollis, and Rory O’Malley. “American Princess” was created by Jamie Denbo, a veteran TV and film actress that is working behind the scenes on this new series.
“American Princess” is set to premiere on Lifetime on June 2. And before you think “Lifetime?!” remember that this is the network that debuted the series “You,” which was snatched up after one season by Netflix and is now one of the hottest series around. So, perhaps Lifetime is turning into a bit of a TV powerhouse with Jenji Kohan helping build up its library.
