The Television Critics Association handed out their 2018 TCA Awards last night and the big winner was a longtime TCA favorite, “The Americans.” The FX drama took home three honors for its final season including Program of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Drama and Individual Achievement in Drama (Keri Russell). Last year’s winner in the former two of those categories, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” went home empty handed.

Other big winners included “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s” Rachel Brosnahan for Individual Achievement in Comedy, the reboot of “Queer Eye” for Outstanding Achievement in Reality, “Killing Eve” for Outstanding New Program and, in something of a surprise, “The Good Place” for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. The critically acclaimed NBC comedy beat stiff competition from “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Barry” and last year’s winner, “Atlanta.” Shockingly, like “Handmaid’s Tale,” Donald Glover‘s groundbreaking FX series went home with no wins this time around.
“The Americans” has won Outstanding Achievement in Drama three out of the six straight years it was nominated. It previously won in 2015 and 2016. This is the first time either Russell or her previously nominated co-star Matthew Rhys has won or the series has taken the coveted Program of the Year honor. With four major Primetime Emmy Award nominations this year, including Outstanding Drama Series, “The Americans” is hoping to surprise and end its impressive run with an Emmy bang. The love bestowed on them by the nation’s TV critics certainly won’t hurt with voting set to begin just a week from now, on Monday, August 13.
