Ana Lily Amirpour certainly knows her way around bold imagery and big canvases. “A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night” and “The Bad Batch” maximize every inch of the frame, and her new short “Yo! My Saint” certainly doesn’t waste a moment.
The ten-minute movie created for fashion house Kenzo falls somewhere between a music, film and fashion. “Yo! My Saint” is a tribute to the label’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection, which turned heads not just with the clothes, but with its groundbreaking all-Asian runway show. It impressed both Amirpour and Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O, who collaborated on this film. The result is Karen O’s title track merged with Amirpour’s storytelling, and the result is well worth a watch.
“Humberto [Leon] and I are technically the producers,” Kenzo co-creative director Carol [Lim] said. “The beautiful part about this is it’s two women that decided to make this film together. It’s an amazing artistic endeavor and a conversation between two women. A female musician and a female director. That’s kind of the starting point of this. We’re so excited for it to finally come out.”
In case you’re wondering, Karen O’s song will be available on vinyl in Kenzo stores or online.
