“Groundhog Day” and, most recently, “Happy Death Day” have taken the idea of an infinite time loop used that premise for a bunch of interesting comedy situations and hijinks. But those films focused on only one protagonist stuck repeating the same day over and over again. What if there were two people stuck? That’s the premise of “Palm Springs.”
The new comedy film, as seen in the trailer, focuses on the characters of Nyles and Sarah, a single guy and a single woman, both forced to repeat the day of a wedding over and over again. No matter if they kill themselves, fall asleep, or do a serious amount of drugs and party, the duo will wake up repeating the same day.
The film stars Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, J.K. Simmons, Meredith Hagner, Camila Mendes, Tyler Hoechlin, and Peter Gallagher. “Palm Springs” is directed by Max Barbakow and written by Andy Siara. The film marks the narrative feature debut for Barbakow.
“Palm Springs” made quite an impact earlier this year as part of the Sundance Film Festival. The film received good reviews and ended up landing the richest distribution deal in the festival’s history, earning approximately $22 million courtesy of a joint deal between NEON and Hulu. The original deal was to include a theatrical release, distributed by NEON, but with COVID-19, that plan was scrapped and now the feature will debut on Hulu.
In our review of the film from the event, we said, “Nyles and Sarah’s antics are silly and over the top, during a night of shrooms they imagine dinosaurs moving in the mountains, but their love is never saccharine. Barbakow’s ‘Palm Springs’ isn’t a sensory overload. In fact, ‘Palm Springs’ is a fabulous adventure in love and growth.”
“Palm Springs” will be available on Hulu on July 10.

When carefree Nyles (Andy Samberg) and reluctant maid of honor Sarah (Cristin Milioti) have a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding, things get complicated when they find themselves unable to escape the venue, themselves, or each other.
