“The exercise wasn’t how can we have fun with a villain?”Angelina Jolie told Entertainment Weekly this week about her live-action re-imagining of the 1959 Walt Disney animated film “Sleeping Beauty” that focuses on the main villain. “It was: What turns people evil and vile and aggressive and cruel? What could have possibly happened to her?”
Titled “Maleficent,” the movie stars Angelina Jolie as the titular character, Elle Fanning as the Sleeping Beauty character and also features Sharlto Copley, Sam Riley and Brenton Thwaites. “It is really funny when people say you’d be obvious for a great villain,” she told the magazine with a laugh. “When that character makes mistakes—which Maleficent does, and crosses many lines—you want them to be angry at her and concerned and confused and in the end, somehow understand something that they didn’t know before.”
Suffice to say it’s the cover story and there’s a meaty interview with Jolie inside. New photos of the of the Robert Stromberg-directed (VFX guy on “Avatar,” Tim Burton‘s “Alice in Wonderland,” etc.) film have been released too. “Maleficent” opens on May 30 and will also be available in all the currently-waning 3D formats as well.
