'Animaniacs' Reboot In The Works

It looks like another series is getting a continuation, as Indiewire reports Amblin Television and Warner Bros. are developing an updated version of the 1990s animated show “Animaniacs.” Steven Spielberg, who developed the original version, will also have a hand in creating the continuation.

For those who don’t remember, “Animaniacs” was a cartoon of various segments (including “Pinky and the Brain,” which later became its own spinoff) that aired on Fox Kids and later the WB (remember when that was a thing?) from 1993 to 1998. The show followed the adventures of the Warner siblings — Yakko, Wakko, and Dot — as they escape from the Warner Bros. water tower and go on adventures inside the studio. Essentially, the siblings served to tie a series of short segments together, acting as hosts of the show. The series concluded with a direct to video finale “Wakko’s Wish” that wasn’t as well received as the show, notably for replacing its humor for a more serious tone.

The show was originally developed by “Tiny Toon Adventures” creator Tom Reugger, who modeled the three siblings after his sons and, surprisingly, won 8 Daytime Emmys during the show’s run. The entire run of “Animaniacs” is available on Netflix, where it’s quite popular and helped spur the talk of a continuation. Even though Spielberg attaches his name to quite a few TV shows these days, he was said to have a pretty active role in “Animaniacs,” including coming up with some story outlines himself, so it’ll be interesting to see if his participation continues. Though development is still in the early stages, it wouldn’t be surprising if we see new episodes relatively soon, especially if someone like Netflix picks it up. If you’ve never seen the show before or are curious to relive your childhood, check it out on Netflix.
