What if you couldn’t believe what you saw with your own eyes?
That’s the hook of the upcoming sci-fi crime thriller “Anon,” starring Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried. In the first trailer for this film, premiering next month on Netflix, we are introduced to a world without crime. In the future, due to people having the ability to instantly recognize who you are based on a technology in your eyes, there is no privacy or anonymity. However, that all changes when a hacker (Seyfried) is able to control what a detective (Owen) is able to actually see.
The footage in the trailer for “Anon” shows a world that is, frankly, terrifying. As Owen’s character drives down the road, he can’t tell if the empty roads are real, or if there’s actually tons of traffic. He sees hundreds of rats in his apartment, but can’t tell if they’re really there or not. And when he looks at Seyfried’s character, he gets no information, not even a name. All this because of a skilled hacker.
The trailer does a great job of presenting the premise, and hopefully, the film can live up to the footage seen. “Anon” is directed by Andrew Niccol, who is probably best known for his film “Gattaca,” which makes this project even more exciting. Hopefully, the person who brought us one of the better futuristic sci-fi films in the last 20 years can replicate that success in “Anon.”
“Anon” debuts will debut on Netflix on May 4.
Here’s the official synopsis from Netflix:
Sal Frieland is a detective in a world with no privacy or anonymity; where everyone’s lives are transparent, traceable, and recorded by the authorities; where crime almost ceases to exist. But in trying to solve a series of murders, Frieland stumbles on a young woman known only as the Girl. She has no identity, no history and is invisible to the cops. Sal realizes this may not be the end of crime, but the beginning.
