With “The Equalizer 2” scheduled for release later this year, director Antoine Fuqua has his sights set on the future. With talks that he’s looking to remake “Scarface” next, Fuqua apparently also is thinking about a Marvel franchise.
In an interview with JoBlo, the “Training Day” director opened up about talks he’s had with Sony about a Marvel character:
“As a kid I grew up with comic books. They talked to me about ‘Black Panther’ years ago, way back in the day. There’s some reason they came up and they talked to me about at Sony, a Marvel character, Morbius [The Living Vampire]…that kinda came up. I don’t know, I have a thirteen-year-old son so I’m watching more of that again and it’s exciting to do that. I’d love to create a new one. Y’know, something that’s closer to what I get excited about.”
As we reported last year, Sony is working on expanding their Spider-Man Universe to include a “Morbius the Living Vampire” film, along with “Venom,” “Silver and Black,” and “Nightwatch.” Unless you’re a hardcore Marvel devotee, you probably haven’t heard of Morbius before. The character is a tragic hero that became a “living vampire” after a biochemical experiment changed him. Morbius feeds on the lifeforce of humans and has the abilities of a classic vampire.
Even if he’s not attached to “Morbius,” Fuqua also discussed the desire to tackle a superhero film, and even mentioned another vampire “Blade” as an interesting choice. “Maybe I’ll get a chance to get lucky to do both. I’ll do ‘Scarface’ and a superhero movie,” said Fuqua.
A director like Fuqua would be an easy choice for a studio looking to launch a franchise. We’re going to bet that he’ll have plenty of offers coming his way. So, maybe we’ll see a Fuqua-directed superhero film in the future. The real question is whether he can convince Denzel Washington to join him.
