'Furiosa': George Miller Reportedly Talked To Anya Taylor-Joy About Starring In 'Mad Max' Spin-Off

Remember all that talk about a ‘Furiosa’ spin-off film from “Mad Max” mastermind George Miller? After “Mad Max: Fury Road” became a big hit and fans fell in love with Charlize Theron’s Furiosa character, there were rumblings that Miller was working on a prequel film that would follow the breakout badass. However, official word never leaked and though there has been rampant speculation for years, we haven’t seen anything concrete. Well, until now. And we have COVID-19 (coronavirus) to thank for the news.

According to a new Variety report about delayed productions (more on that in a separate article), there is news that not only is George Miller actively developing his ‘Furiosa’ prequel film, but he had already begun speaking with possible actresses to take over the role. Obviously, the film would focus on the earlier days of the character, making Theron unable to star (minus some sort of wacky ‘Irishman’ CGI silliness). So, who is Miller talking to? Well, the report claims that one of the names being mentioned is none other than Anya Taylor-Joy.

If you’re a reader of this website, you’re likely familiar with Taylor-Joy. She broke out in a big way as the star of Robert Eggers’ “The Witch.” And subsequently, the young actress has had leading roles in solid films such as “Split,” “Thoroughbreds,” and the recently-released “Emma.” She’s also set to make her superhero debut in the upcoming “The New Mutants,” if that film ever sees the light of day.

On paper, and looking at pictures, Taylor-Joy would be a great choice for the role. She is one of the best up-and-coming actresses working today and is due for her huge action-star breakout (because, once again, ‘New Mutants’ is never being released…obvi).

As far as where Miller is in the development of the feature, it seems as if he’s pretty far along. In addition to finding the leading lady, it’s being reported that he’s still eyeing a 2021 production start date for the ‘Fury Road’ prequel. So, if that’s the case, we may finally get that mythical ‘Furiosa’ spin-off we’ve been asking about for years.
