Last year, it was announced that Apple and A24 had agreed on a deal that would allow the two companies to work together on a select number of films that would be produced by the indie company and distributed through the tech giant’s upcoming streaming service, Apple TV+. The first film from this deal is the already-announced “On the Rocks,” from director Sofia Coppola. And for the next project to be birthed from this union, Apple and A24 are looking at director Josephine Decker for help.
ScreenDaily is reporting that Decker and has agreed to helm the upcoming YA romance film “The Sky is Everywhere.” The film, based on the novel of the same name from author Jandy Nelson, tells the story of a teen girl that is struggling to cope with the sudden death of her older sister. Along the way, she begins to develop feelings for two boys, one of which is the former fiancé of her now-deceased sibling. Decker will direct the film, based on a script from Nelson, who is adapting her own work.
Decker is probably best known for her recent film “Madeline’s Madeline,” which was one of the breakout indie films of 2018. Previously, she directed numerous shorts and docs, as well as the 2014 feature “Thou Wast Mild and Lovely.” However, it was her 2018 film that really caught the attention of many film fans and made her one of the up-and-coming filmmakers to keep an eye on.
While we still don’t know much about the agreement between A24 and Apple, it appears that the deal is already off and running and will feature some of the same sorts of films that put the indie production company on the map. It’s also been reported that these films might not be streaming-exclusive releases, as the Coppola film is expected to have a full theatrical run. Whether or not that’s what happens with “The Sky is Everywhere” is still undetermined.
