You hear that? It’s the deadly sound of silence from the folks behind Jim Sheridan‘s “Dream House.” Other than a trailer that dropped this summer and a clip that arrived earlier this week, it seems that Universal would like to pretend this movie isn’t coming out at all, despite the starry cast of Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts.
As 24 Frames reports, and as our inbox, empty of any dates and times for the film, confirms, “Dream House” won’t be getting any advance screenings for press prior to its release next week. And given the troubling production history of the movie, we’re not entirely surprised. As CinemaBlend hinted a while ago, behind the scenes neither the director (who apparently had the movie taken away from him) nor the cast are pleased with the final result, which may be why there is a curious lack of press in the run up to its release. But perhaps we should have seen the warning signs when the reshoots wound up delaying the film from its originally planned February release date.
It’s a sad turn for Jim Sheridan, whose last film “Brothers” was overlooked and did respectable but not particularly great numbers at the box office, and whose previous effort was the god-awful “Get Rich Or Die Tryin” (and even that one played for critics). As for the cast, this will just be a temporary blip on their filmographies as they have bigger and better things on the horizon. But in this age when everyone says that critics aren’t needed, we guess that only applies if your movie isn’t a potential disaster, in which case the studio gets worried about their opinion getting out there. Anyway, if somehow you’re still interested and didn’t have the twist spoiled for you yet, “Dream House” opens on September 30th. Proceed with caution.
