Aubrey Plaza Joins Roman Coppola's 'Charlie Swan III' Starring Charlie Sheen

The dry, sharp comedy stylings of rising star Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) next to the train wreck that was (possibly still is) Charlie Sheen certainly sounds like an odd combination on paper. But on closer inspection, maybe it’s really an inspired idea, especially given it’s coming with the long-awaited return of one of our favorite underrated filmmakers.

Variety reports that Plaza has joined the long-belated sophomore directorial effort of Roman Coppola entitled, “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III.” Also featuring Coppola’s cousin, Jason Schwartzmann, the story will fascinatingly mirror Charlie Sheen’s own life and follow a successful graphic designer whose fame, money and charm have made him irresistible to women only to have his life swirl into a downward spiral of doubt, confusion and reflection when his girlfriend breaks up with him. Plaza will play Marnie, a producer who works with Swan at his company, Swan Design.

A few more details about the film have also emerged and note that “through delirious fantasies involving his many failed romances, [Swan] begins the hard road of self-evaluation to come to terms with life without [the love of his life].”

Comeback story of the year? The talent is there for it and the story certainly sounds deliciously twisted enough for Coppola, who will reteam with his “CQ” composer Roger Neil (”Beginners,” “Tanner Hall”) on this as well. No word on when production might begin but with principals coming in place — obviously, Sheen’s love interest is yet to be cast — surely we’re looking at a date just around the corner.
