Filmmaker James Cameron took on the ambitious effort to make four sequels to his box office juggernaut “Avatar” and, even crazier, shooting multiple installments at the same time. Given the scale of the original film, mixing extensive motion capture and live-action sequences, it has taken years to complete, leading to multiple release delays.
As Walt Disney Studios held a presentation at CinemaCon 2022 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas earlier today, they confirmed the title of the second movie coming out later this year. Disney has announced that “Avatar 2” will now be officially known as “Avatar: The Way of Water” and suggests other reported titles for the sequels are correct as well. We’re expected to see Cameron explore the oceans of Pandora and the title seems to reinforce this.
Those other titles are supposed to be “Avatar: The Seed Bearer,” “Avatar: The Tulkun Rider,” and “Avatar: The Quest For Eywa.”
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
The first sequel stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kate Winslet.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” will finally head to theaters on December 16 and Disney will re-release “Avatar” in theaters on September 23 to help introduce the world of Pandora to audiences that weren’t even born when the original was released in 2009.
