There’s plenty — arguably too many — massive movie events coming this year, from Tarantino taking on classic Hollywood to the end of the Skywalker saga. But the biggest of them all is likely to be “Avengers: Endgame,” the climax of the 22-movie Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. ‘Climax’ obviously suggests that they’ll be no others after this – these films will, at this point, continue to be made as long as there’s human life on earth.
But after the humdinger of a cliffhanger at the end of “Infinity War” — half of all life in the universe, including a number of beloved heroes, being instantly wiped out, thanks to the malevolent Thanos — “Endgame” has long been billed as an ending for at least some of its characters, with the original Avengers line-up likely to be exiting the series after this, and quite possibly taking their characters with them. Said to weigh in at least three hours, this is going to be a blockbuster like few others.
With “Captain Marvel” now in theaters and the movie barely six weeks away, the final trailer for the film just dropped by surprise, and what’s most impressive is the extent to which the Russo Brothers and co still aren’t giving much away. There’s almost none of the epic action beats that a blockbuster trailer usually contains, with the muted mood of the previous trailer, and the focus on character that’s made the MCU such a phenomenon.
There’s a focus on where the characters began and where they’re ending up, but we do get a few tidbits here — some natty new uniforms that may or may not relate to the quantum realm, the appearance of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Jeremy Renner returning to the fold with a new get-up. But it ensures that we’ll be going in to “Endgame” with more surprises in store than almost any blockbuster in living memory. Until the Tv spots start dropping, anyway.
“Avengers: Endgame” drops on April 26th (that’s just two days before the Battle Of Winterfell on “Game Of Thrones,” so be prepared to say goodbye to A LOT of beloved characters that weekend…). Watch the trailer below.
