'Avengers: Infinity War' Joins The $2 Billion Club At The Box Office

Since its release in late April, “Avengers: Infinity War” has compiled a really impressive list of records. The best one is probably the opening weekend crown, beating “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” However, this latest milestone might be equally as noteworthy. As of yesterday’s box office, ‘Infinity War’ has joined the elite $2 billion club.

The latest ‘Avengers’ film joins only three films (“Avatar,” “Titanic,” and ‘The Force Awakens’) in the coveted crew of films that have pulled in at least $2 billion worldwide. As of this writing, the film currently sits at $2.002 billion, which is approximately $66 million behind ‘Force Awakens.’ However, even with the extended run in China and the way it’s holding strong in the US, it’ll be a stretch for ‘Infinity War’ to reach that number. But hey, #4 ain’t too shabby!

However, reaching $2 billion alone is far from an easy feat, especially considering the ‘Avengers’ film didn’t even beat “Black Panther” domestically. In the States, ‘Panther’ finished just a hair shy of $700 million, and even with our most optimistic projections, it’s doubtful that ‘Infinity War’ will come close to that number. However, by the end of the week, it should pass “Titanic” for #4 on the all-time domestic list.

The impressive domestic run doesn’t compare to the insane international cume. Right now, ‘Infinity War’ sits at #3 with $1.35 billion overseas. That’s more than every film not directed by James Cameron. To put the international number in perspective, if ‘Infinity War’ just had its $1.35 billion in the bank, without any domestic earnings, it’ll still rank #8 on the all-time worldwide list, beating the lifetime, worldwide gross of “Black Panther.”

So, what is preventing ‘Infinity War’ from reaching ‘The Force Awakens,’ or even “Avatar” or “Titanic?” Competition. All of those films opened during Christmas holiday season and had very little competition at the box office. Even though ‘Infinity War’ is the second-fastest to reach $2 billion, it’s not racing along anymore. Thanks to “Deadpool 2” and yes, even ‘Solo,’ the box office is a crowded field right now. And with “Incredibles 2” opening this week, and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” the week after, it appears that the ‘Infinity War’ train will be coming to a stop soon.

If you super fans out there want to keep pushing the ‘Avengers’ totals higher, better run to the theater soon!
