'Avengers: Infinity War' Second-Fastest To $500 Million And Moves Into Top 10 All-Time

Here’s a shocker – “Avengers: Infinity War” dominated the box office and has collected a few more milestones. It’s almost as if we can copy/paste our box office reports from the last two weekends and run them again because as expected, the Marvel Studios film is still the most dominant film we’ve seen in a while at the multiplex.

This weekend, ‘Infinity War’ pulled in an estimated $60 million* (-48% drop from last weekend) for a domestic total of $546 million after three weekends. The superhero epic was easily the #1 film and has added a couple more achievements to its already long list. The latest ‘Avengers’ film is the second fastest to reach $500 million (15 days), which is 5 days slower than “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but one day faster than ‘The Last Jedi.’ The film also officially hits the all-time top 10, with the $546 million total good for #8 on the all-time domestic list, passing “The Dark Knight.”

However, the superlatives are going to be slowing down in the coming weeks, as ‘Infinity War’ ends its dominance. With three weeks of data, many are predicting (as we said 2 weeks ago) that ‘Infinity War’ isn’t going to really threaten the top records domestically. In fact, predictions put ‘Infinity War’ at approximately $650 million at the end of its domestic run. Depending on the exact number, the Marvel film could end up out of the top 5 all-time, showing that the film was truly front-loaded after that record-breaking opening weekend. Still, this isn’t anything for Disney/Marvel Studios to be ashamed about. The film is doing incredibly well domestically. But just not “Black Panther” good.

Speaking of T’Challa, it’s worth mentioning that “Black Panther” stuck around in the top 10, for an impressive 13th weekend in a row, at #9 with an estimated $2.1 million. The surprise hit of the year is inching closer and closer to $700 million domestically, even though the film is on SVOD now and will have its Blu-ray/DVD release this week. It’s clear that Disney wants the $700 milestone before allowing “Black Panther” to go off into the sunset.

This Mother’s Day weekend saw the debuts of two Mom-themed films. Coming in at #2 is Melissa McCarthy’s latest comedy, “Life of the Party,” with an estimated $17.9 million. While $17.9 million is nothing to sneeze at, that debut total is on the lower-end for McCarthy, finishing behind pretty much all of her major releases, including 2014’s “Tammy.” The film received a ‘B’ CinemaScore, which isn’t horrible but also isn’t great. It’s possible that with “Deadpool 2” opening next weekend, “Life of the Party” will get lost in the shuffle.

The other major release is “Breaking In.” Instead of focusing on the comedic aspects of #MomLife like McCarthy, Gabrielle Union’s film featured a mom taking on a group of criminals that are holding her kids hostage. The film debuted at #3 this weekend, with an estimated $14.4 million. “Breaking In” is the latest film from producer Will Packer (“Girls Trip,” “Think Like A Man,” “Ride Along”) and is one of the lower debuts in his career. Historically, his films are frontloaded, so don’t expect much from the film in the coming weeks.

The rest of the top 10 is as expected. Last weekend’s major debut “Overboard” hung around at #4 with a modest -40% drop for an estimated $8.8 million. “A Quiet Place,” in its 6th weekend, is chugging along with another $6.1 million at #5. That horror film has become Paramount’s biggest film since 2015’s “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” which had a domestic total of $195 million. And the final film worth mentioning is the other major debut from last weekend, “Tully.” While the film started well below expectations, the Jason Reitman/Diablo Cody film saw only a -28% drop to $2.35 million this weekend. While the film isn’t exactly lighting up the box office, word-of-mouth might keep the film around the top 10 for a couple more weeks.

Next week, “Deadpool 2” hits theaters and is expected to have anywhere from a $130 – $150 million opening, unseating “Avengers: Infinity War” at #1. It’ll be interesting to see how much of a hit the ‘Avengers’ film takes from Ryan Reynolds’ R-rated hero.
