Award Season Watch: San Fran, Phoenix, San Diego And St. Louis Critics Laud Usual Suspects, Mostly 'Slumdog Millionaire'

Can there be any doubt that “Slumdog Millionaire” has gone from the little movie that could to sure-fire Best Picture Oscar nominee? The film has taken another slab of critical awards.

More Crit awards from around the U.S. The Phoenix Film Critics Society have given Best Picture and Director to “Slumdog Millionaire” and Danny Boyle. Sean Penn’s “Milk” performance took Best Actor and Meryl Streep scored Best Actress for her ferocious performance in “Doubt.” [PFCS]

The San Diego Film Critics Awards have always given ‘Slumdog’ the Best Film prize, Best Foreign Film to “Let The Right One In,” and Best Original Screenplay to Tom McCarthy’s “The Visitor.” Kate Winslet finally wins an award for Best Actress in… not “Revolutionary Road,” but “The Reader.” Odd. Marisa Tomei takes Best Supporting Actress (Which she also was awarded by the Phoenix crits). [AwardsDaily]

The Detroit Film Critics have announced their nominees, up for Best Film is “The Dark Knight,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Slumdog Millionaire” “WALL-E” and “The Wrestler.” They’ve also nominated Darren Aronofsky for Best Director which we haven’t seen a lot of this season. These wise Detroit critics have finally given some love to Eddie Marsan’s amazing turn in “Happy-Go-Lucky,” and he earns a Best Supporting Actor nomination. [Everything Michigan]

Kris Tapley’s top 10 list is a head scratcher in my opinion, “Slumdog Millionaire,” is number 1, but number 2 is “Bolt” and “Pineapple Express” is number 4. Maybe it’s reverse snob contrarianism. Whatever floats your boat we guess. [IC]

“The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button” has not see an exorbitant of pre-Oscar/non-Globe critical award praise, but the St. Louis critics awarded the film with Best Picture. David Fincher however did not take the Best Director and instead it went to Danny Boyle. Best Actress went to Kate Winslet, this time for the right role in “Revolutionary Road,” and Viola Davis took the Best Supporting prize for “Doubt.” [AwardsDaily]
