Space dramas normally come in a couple of different flavors. There’s the “Ad Astra” style where the drama overtakes the space aspect of it. Then you have something like “Interstellar,”which focuses on spectacle over story (Sorry, Nolan fans). But what If you wanted even less space and more drama than either of those? That’s where you get “Away.”
As seen in the trailer for “Away,” Netflix’s new space drama series starring Hilary Swank feels like the lovechild of “First Man” and “This is Us.” Sure, it has a good cast and looks like it’s going to have some really decent spectacle, but the clear focus of the series is on the human drama about people from all sorts of walks of life that are chosen for the first manned mission to Mars that will take them from their respective families for three years. Obviously, that’s the type of situation that is ripe with potential melodrama.
Joining Swank in the cast are Josh Charles, Talitha Bateman, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh, Ray Panthaki, Vivian Wu, and Monique Curnen. “Away” comes from creator Andrew Hinderaker and executive producers Jason Katims, Jessica Goldberg, and Matt Reeves.
“Away” is set to debut on Netflix on September 4.
Here’s the synopsis:
From Executive Producer Jason Katims, the Netflix series Away is a thrilling, emotional drama on an epic scale that celebrates the incredible advancements humans can achieve and the personal sacrifices they must make along the way. As American astronaut Emma Green (Hilary Swank) prepares to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars, she must reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman) when they need her the most. As the crew’s journey into space intensifies, their personal dynamics and the effects of being away from their loved ones back on Earth become increasingly complex. Away shows that sometimes to reach for the stars, we must leave home behind.
