Ok, so Werner Herzog is re-making the reprobate classic, “Bad Lieutenant” with Nicolas Cage in the sleazy role made infamous by Harvey Kietel, right?
Guess again? According to sweaty, low-life malcontent director Abel Ferrara who directed the original flick, maybe not. Spoutblog was at the “Chelsea On The Rocks” press conferences and the perenially cantakerous Ferrara went off about the remake sometimes not even when prompted by questions from reporters.
Apparently either Harvey Weinstein or Harvey Keitel asked the loudmouth filmmaker not to say negative about the remake once it was announced (sounds like Weinstein, but is he producing this thing?
“Harvey begged me not to say anything mean, or stupid. [pause] But I wish these people die in hell. I hope they’re all in the same streetcar, and it blows up.”
Classy. Another journalist used the remake as a jumping off to another question, but was cut-off by Ferrara who jumped back onto the subject.
“It hasn’t been remade yet.”
“But it will be,” the reporter said.
Ferrara shook his head before putting it in his hands. “Don’t count on it.”
Uhh, ok, whatever that means [ed. knowing Ferrara, probably absolutely nothing]. You have to take most of what Ferrara says with a grain of salt because he bitches and moans and wishes colon cancer on every third person he runs into during the day, but that’s why we kind of love him, even though he’s a bit of a dbag.
