Barack Obama Gets Romantic In First Trailer For 'Southside With You'

Southside With YouHistory will ultimately decide the legacy of President Barack Obama when his eight years in office ends later this year, but it’s safe to say his rise to the Oval Office was pretty remarkable. Part of that journey involved one Michelle Robinson, who would become his romantic partner, wife, and First Lady, and the upcoming "Southside With You" details their courtship.

Directed by Richard Tanne, the film might seem to employ a somewhat cornball concept, tracking a single date between Barack and Michelle over the course of one day. But we were won over by the lowkey film at Sundance, calling it "winningly sweet and earnest" and "a charmer" that resonates far beyond the two people it revolves around. Here’s the synopsis:

Inspired by Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date, SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU recounts the eventful summer day in 1989 when a young law firm associate named Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) tried to woo lawyer Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) during a daylong date that took them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing to the site of their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.

"Southside With You" opens on August 26th.
