'Becoming' Trailer: Michelle Obama Takes Centerstage In Netflix Doc

As Michelle Obama says in the new trailer for the documentary “Becoming,” so much of the former First Lady’s life happened before the eight-year run of her husband, Barack Obama, as President of the United States. And that’s exactly what the new Netflix film is about.

In “Becoming,” the camera follows Michelle Obama on a 34-city speaking tour where she shares stories about her past, growing up in Chicago, as well as how that history helps shape her view of the world today. And as you might expect, much like her husband, the message that Mrs. Obama shares with the assorted people she meets along the way is about hope. Regardless of how well the film inspires people, it’s clear that the speaking tour that Michelle Obama went on during this time was enough to inspire a number of young women.

The new doc is directed by Nadia Hallgren. “Becoming” marks the third Netflix release from Higher Ground, the production company founded by the Obamas. Previous releases include the acclaimed “Crip Camp” and the Oscar-winning documentary “American Factory.”

“Becoming” arrives on Netflix on May 6.
