That’s right, “Bel-Air” is a new take on a young man’s journey from West Philadelphia to Los Angeles, updated for a new generation. Smith teams up with Morgan Cooper for the dramatic reboot of the ’90s sitcom after he saw, and praised, Cooper’s fan film that first explored the concept. While the story remains the same, “Bel-Air” offers a more serious take on Will’s transition to life with the Banks in California.
Here’s the show’s official synopsis:
Set in modern-day America, Peacock’s new one-hour drama series Bel-Air imagines the beloved sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air through a new, dramatic take on Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. As these two worlds collide, Will reckons with the power of second chances while navigating the conflicts, emotions, and biases of a world far different from the only one he’s ever known.
“Bel-Air” stars newcomer Jabari Banks in the role of Will Smith. The show also stars Adrian Holmes, Cassandra Freeman, Olly Sholotan, Coco Jones, and Akira Akbar. Jimmy Akingbola, Jordan L. Jones, and Simone Joy Jones round the cast of series regulars.
Peacock won out the bidding war for “Bel-Air” over Netflix and HBO Max to give the show a two-season order. The show premieres on the streaming channel next month on Super Bowl Sunday, with three episodes available at launch, then new episodes released weekly.
