'Game Of Thrones' Creators Benioff & Weiss To Develop A New Lovecraft Film For Warner Bros.

With “Star Wars” and “Game of Thrones” firmly in the rearview mirror, it was only a matter of time before we found out what the duo of David Benioff and DB Weiss had coming for film and TV fans. Sure, they’ve signed a massive deal with Netflix to work on projects, but apparently, before they hunker down in the streaming side of the industry, Benioff and Weiss have a Warner Bros. film they’re developing, based on the stories of HP Lovecraft.

According to Deadline, Benioff and Weiss have signed a deal to bring the story of Hans Rodionoff’s graphic novel “Lovecraft” to the big screen with a feature film. The quick elevator pitch for the film is fairly simple. You know all those creatures and stories that were crafted by legendary writer HP Lovecraft? Well, what if those weren’t all made up? What if those monsters actually exist? That’s what the still-untitled film is said to explore.

Writing the script are Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi. The writing duo is probably best known for their various collaborations with filmmaker Karyn Kusama, including “Aeon Flux,” “The Invitation,” and last year’s underrated drama “Destroyer.” Interestingly enough, the report claims that Kusama is on board this project as an executive producer.

The reason this film is being worked on at Warner Bros. and not Netflix is due to the duo having been interested in this project for years, with the studio involved. Unfortunately, Benioff and Weiss were unable to seriously develop it due to their commitment to “Game of Thrones.” Now that’s done, and “Star Wars” is no longer on the table, it appears that the duo has some time on its hands before they shack up at Netflix.

No word on when this Cthulu-themed, Lovecraft-ian film will be released.
