'The Three-Body Problem': Benioff & Weiss Are Working On A New Sci-Fi Series Produced By Rian Johnson

Since their work ended on “Game of Thrones” last year, many have wondered where we might see David Benioff and DB Weiss end up. Well, after a false start on HBO, it appears the massive production deal the duo signed with Netflix is beginning to pay off with Benioff and Weiss announcing their latest series, “The Three-Body Problem.”

According to Netflix, Benioff and Weiss are developing a new epic TV series based on the sci-fi novel, “The Three-Body Problem.” The synopsis is fairly simple, as the series is going to tell the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization. Of course, given this is Benioff and Weiss, we’re going to assume there’s much more to the story than just that.

In addition to the two writers and producers, Benioff and Weiss, there’s even more great talent working on the series. Rian Johnson and producing partner Ram Bergman are both executive producers on the new series, as well as the author, Liu Cixin, and the novel’s English-language translator, Ken Liu, who will both be consulting producers.

“Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe,” said Benioff and Weiss. “We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world.”

“I have the greatest respect for and faith in the creative team adapting ‘The Three-Body Problem’ for television audiences,” added author Liu Cixin. “I set out to tell a story that transcends time and the confines of nations, cultures and races; one that compels us to consider the fate of humankind as a whole. It is a great honor as an author to see this unique sci-fi concept travel and gain fandom across the globe and I am excited for new and existing fans all over the world to discover the story on Netflix.”

As mentioned, things have been fairly quiet in regards to Benioff and Weiss since the conclusion of “Game of Thrones,” which saw fans openly revolt against the duo’s vision of the end of the fantasy series. It’ll be interesting to see if the writers have lost their cache with fans or if their names will be enough to draw viewers to this new high-concept series. We’ll just have to wait and see.
