While somewhat arbitrary and beholden to what’s finished, what’s available, and what’s ready, film festivals tend to have good years and bad years, depending. And well, after several good years, where the Berlin Film Festival has re-established itself as a significant player in the world cinema film festival sweepstakes, the Berlinale has really upped the ante in 2022 with a terrific line-up. Today, the festival revealed its complete wares with its Competition section, an Encounters section, and Special Galas program. And there are highlights aplenty.

Perhaps the most anticipated title in the competition section is Claire Denis’ new film starring Juliette Binoche, Vincent Lindon. Once titled “Fire,” it is now known as “Both Sides of the Blade” and centers on an affair among friends within the backdrop of French radio. Additional competition highlights include Mikhaël Hers’ “The Passengers of the Night” starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, François Ozon’s previously announced opening night film “Peter von Kant,” Hong Sangsoo’s latest, “The Novelist’s Film,” and Denis Côté’s “That Kind of Summer.”

The Encounters gets a big boost by horror/bizarro maestro Peter Strickland’s new film “Flux Gourmet” starring Asa Butterfield, Gwendoline Christie, Ariane Labed, and more. The Special Films program has many treats, including Andrew Dominik’s new Nick Cave and Warren Ellis documentary “This Much I Know To Be True” and Argentian filmmaker Lucrecia Martel’s new documentary short film, “North Terminal.” Finally, there’s the Special Galas section which includes “The Outfit” with Mark Rylance and Dylan O’Brien and “Against the Ice” with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Laurent Larivière’s “About Joan” starring Isabelle Huppert. The full line-up also includes new films by Ulrich Seidl, Ursula Meier, Quentin Dupieux, and more.
In the Competition, 18 films are in the race for the Golden and Silver Bears. Productions from 15 countries are represented. 17 films are world premieres. Seven films were directed by women. Human and emotional bonds are a common thread. Almost all films set their tales out of the city center, in the periphery, in the countryside, or they follow the characters in their journeys away from towns.

The competitive section Encounters 2022 comprises 15 films, all of which are world premieres. There is one first feature. This year’s selection includes more films than usual from established filmmakers (Bertrand Bonello, Ruth Beckermann, Mitra Farahani, Sho Miyake, Arnaud des Pallières, Gastón Solnicki, Peter Strickland, Syllas Tsoumerkas), but also welcomes new voices. Many filmmakers have chosen dialogue as the most appropriate form to overcome fences, distances, and confinements.
