Worst: DJ Questlove
The hip hop legend wasn’t bad, but the idea of having him on stage to drop beats in and out of commercials never really went anywhere. And it seems his presence was only required to enable Jimmy Fallon to indulge in a ridiculously awful “Chastain and the Redmayne” musical joke set to Cypress Hill‘s “Insane In The Membrane.” Ugh.

Worst: Jimmy Fallon’s monologue
Fallon clearly needed his teleprompter and, in some respects, we should give him a pass for not having it at first. But, trying to pull off Chris Rock’s voice for a joke and one as long as that? No, sir. That is not appropriate in 2017. Nor would it have been cool when you were on “SNL” over a decade ago. Also, Donald Trump jokes from one of the biggest Trump enablers of the past election probably won’t fly with this crowd (and didn’t). But no matter what jokes landed it’s a fail after that Rock moment.

Worst: Jimmy Fallon during the rest of the show
The good news is Fallon didn’t make anyone play a game (probably no time), but his jokes out of every commercial break were cringeworthy at times (“Sorry, we were just watching a blooper reel for ‘Manchester by the Sea’”). And the rest just felt incredibly forced (shades of Seth MacFarlane’s failed Oscar gig). The Late Night host managed to be both awkward and “memorable” in the worst way possible. Can we get Seth Meyers next year, NBC?
Worst: “Hidden Fences”
I’m not even sure what to say about this. Jenna Bush, acting as an interviewer/host on NBC’s red carpet, referred to “Hidden Figures” as “Hidden Fences” while interviewing Pharrell Williams who was nominated for the score and is officially a producer on the film. If that wasn’t bad enough, Michael Keaton also referred to “Hidden Fences” when presenting Best Supporting Actress and announcing nominee Octavia Spencer who was obviously nominated for “Hidden Figures.” Anyone who knows Keaton wouldn’t put it past him to purposely say “Hidden Fences” as a joke after Bush’s early flub was trending on Twitter, but even if that was his intent it was in bad taste.
