Beyonce Dominates 59th Grammy Nominations As 'Suicide Squad' Gets 3 Nods

Oscar’s big nomination day is still over a month away, but music got its moment in the spotlight as The Recording Academy revealed the nominees for the 59th Grammy Awards this morning and, as expected, Queen Bee ruled the roost.

Beyonce took nine nominations including Record of the Year (“Formation”), Album of the Year (“Lemonade”) and Song of the Year (“Formation”). Drake, Rihanna and Chance the Rapper all earned seven while Adele took five (Xavier Dolan‘s video for “Hello” was snubbed). Frank Ocean did not submit his album “Blonde,” one of the most critically acclaimed of the year, for consideration.

Among movie-centric nominations, Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” from “Trolls” (one of the biggest hits of 2016) received a Best Song Written for Visual Media as did “Just Like Fire” from “Alice Through The Looking Glass,” Peter Gabriel’s “The Veil” from “Snowden” and Sia’s “Try Everything” from “Zootopia.” Shockingly, two “Suicide Squad” tracks, “Purple Lamborghini” and “Heathens,” also were recognized. Warner Bros.’ critically lambasted superhero film also took a nod in the Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media along with 2015’s “Straight Outta Compton” and “Amy” as well as “Miles Ahead” and HBO’s cancelled “Vinyl.” Score Soundtrack nods went to “Bridge of Spies,” Oscar winner “The Hateful Eight,” “The Revenant,” “Star Wars: Episode VII  – The Force Awakens” and two, yes, two separate nods for “Stranger Things Volume 1″ and “Stranger Things Volume 2″ (that seems slightly unfair don’t you think?).

Circling back on Best Song Written for Visual Media, the nods for “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” and “Try Everything” certainly help those songs in their battle for an extremely competitive Best Original Song Oscar nomination.  “Just like Fire” and Gabriel’s “The Veil” are long shots although Gabriel is a former nominee. It’s unclear whether the ‘Suicide’ tracks even qualify under Academy rules, but dare to dream.

It’s important to note when considering all the nominees that the eligibility period for 2016 was between Oct. 1, 2015 and Sept. 30, 2016.

The 59th GRAMMY Awards will be handed out on Sunday, Feb. 12 live on CBS. Here are some of the more prominent categories and their nominees.
