We recently speculated whether the proposed third installment in the “Ghostbusters” franchise would be enough of a draw card to get the enigmatic Bill Murray and his on-screen partner Sigourney Weaver to reprise their roles as Peter and Dana Venkman.
Speaking with SciFiSquad now, Weaver has revealed that she doesn’t “expect to have anything to do with” the sequel though claims Murray will in fact be returning. When asked about what her and Murray ‘s on-screen relationship will be like in ‘Ghostbusters 3,” Weaver proclaimed, “Non-existent.”
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure [the relationship won’t be featured]. I think they’re still writing it, but I’d be very surprised … You never know. I just did a benefit with Bill, and we love working together, but I think they’re trying to create something new completely with the Ghostbusters, although I know Bill is in it. I hope my little son Oscar [from “Ghostbusters 2″] is a Ghostbuster!”
Further, on the prospect of her own appearance in the sequel, Weaver announced: “No, I don’t expect to have anything to do with it, although I wish them well.” This comes after co-star Dan Aykroyd optimistically told us just two weeks ago that “Weaver will be in it, I know. We’ll make that happen.” Ummm, what happened to that? Perhaps, they’re still buttering Weaver up but, by the sounds it, she won’t be reprising her role as Dana Venkman any time soon.
Also, despite Weaver more or less confirming Murray’s interest and commitment to the project, the actor is more than notorious for dropping in and out of projects willy-nilly. This was recently noted by Harold Ramis: “I have no idea . We have no social relationship whatsoever, it’d be hard to predict. But you know, the encouraging thing is, he’s very elusive…” Encouraging? Maybe until he doesn’t show up day one.
“Ghostbusters 3” is currently being written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (“The Office,” “Year One”) with a tentative 2011 release date in mind.
