Thought awards season was wrapping up for the Christmas break? Think again, as this morning’s seen the reveal of the Critics Choice Movie Awards for this year. The 20th such line-up announced by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, it’s one of the more expansive outings and populist outings in the season, with thirty categories including Best Young Actor/Actress, Best Actor In An Action Movie, and Best Sci-Fi Horror Movie alongside the usual suspects.
That means that it’s a rare awards season excursion for movies like "Edge Of Tomorrow" and "Guardians Of The Galaxy," both of which picked up multiple nods, but it’s not without value as a precursor, especially as it’s a larger group of voters than the HFPA or most critics groups — last year, the Critics’ Choice winners matched up exactly with the Academy’s.
This time, "Birdman" leads once again, with thirteen nominations, while "Grand Budapest Hotel" was behind with eleven. Could the latter be another sign that Wes Anderson‘s finally going to crack the Academy this time around? "Boyhood" was the third biggest performer with eight, while "Gone Girl," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler" (continuing to do better in the precursors than most expected), "Selma," "The Theory Of Everything," "Unbroken" and "Whiplash" completed the Best Picture line-up.
Missing from that group are "Into The Woods" and "Foxcatcher," the latter of which also surprisingly failed to get a nod for Steve Carell. This is a respectable line-up on the whole, with some engagingly distinctive picks, including Marion Cotillard in Best Actress for "Two Days One Night," and Tilda Swinton as Supporting Actress for "Snowpiercer," but again, in a season with ups and downs, it’s difficult to read too much into it.
