'Birds Of Prey' Director Cathy Yan Would Love To See The New Characters Get Their Own Spin-Off Films

It’s clear, once the end credits begin to roll, that the world set up in “Birds of Prey” isn’t just a one-time thing. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn has already appeared in one film previous to this new project, and she’s set to return in James Gunn’s upcoming “The Suicide Squad.” But yet, ‘Birds’ introduces a whole new cast of supporting characters that are clearly being set up for bigger, better things in the future.

And according to a new interview with ‘Birds’ director Cathy Yan, there isn’t one character out of the new team that Harley helps create that she wouldn’t want to see spin-off into their own film.

“I think they all could, honestly. They all have such great attitudes, they’re all very different. It would be really fun to see where any of them go,” said the filmmaker.

The characters that are being referenced include Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who is a clear standout in her limited role), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), and Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco). Whether or not these ladies get their own films or another team-up flick is yet to be determined, but after you watch the film, there is clearly more story to tell with each of them.

It’s not just spin-offs that Yan would like to see. In fact, the director said she would “love” to see a film that shows a crossover between the Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman. However, you have to think that Warner Bros. would be a bit hesitant mixing the very R-rated world of Harley Quinn and Co. with the PG-13, family-friendliness of “Wonder Woman.” Then again, stranger things have happened, so who knows?

For now, before any talk of sequels, spin-offs, or crossovers, “Birds of Prey” has to be a box office success. So far, critics largely seem to be impressed by the work done by Yan and the rest of the ‘Birds’ crew and cast. All that’s left to see is how enthusiastic fans will be with the very colorful, wild, raunchy Gotham that is showcased in the film.

“Birds of Prey” arrives in theaters tomorrow.
