As part of Warner Bros.’s commitment to bring the DC Multiverse to the big screen, we’re about to get the original Justice Society Of America in a film for the first time, thanks to the first-ever “Black Adam” feature film. While fans may be excited to see Doctor Fate and Cyclone in live-action for the first time, they won’t be seeing the seminal DC character of Hawkgirl in the film.

The news comes from Dwayne Johnson himself, who asked a fan’s question on Twitter regarding the appearance of Hawkgirl in the “Black Adam” film. It seems like Hawkgirl was “[100%] in our original JSA team. Sadly, it’s a complicated story I’ll share [with] the fans down the road,” Johnson explained. “But it opened up the door for another awesome opportunity for another actress to come in and crush the role of Cyclone. I believe it all works out how it’s meant to.”
The Tweet makes it sound like there’s some kind of rights issues preventing Hawkgirl from appearing in “Black Adam,” despite the character appearing in several TV shows and animated films, including appearances in “The Flash,” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” together with Hawkman. Perhaps this is a hint of a future “Birds of Prey” sequel including Hawkgirl? After all, a version of the character was a member of the titular superhero team together with Black Canary and Barbara Gordon.
Hawkgirl, and by extension Hawkman, are among the most complicated characters in the DC universe due to their origin story constantly being re-written by writers — leading to Hawkman’s confusing history getting its own entry in the DC wiki.
