It’s not easy to put the upcoming film, “Black Bear,” in a specific genre category. And the new trailer for the feature doesn’t do us any favors showcasing what is a chaotic film that blends comedy, thriller, and dramatic aspects into a mish-mash that somehow works…really well.
The basics of the plot are laid out in the trailer, as “Black Bear” tells the story of a house guest that visits a troubled couple that have recently left their life in Brooklyn for the joys of the wilderness. But that fairly benign premise does little to warn a viewer about what they’re going to experience with the film, as the trailer shows just how the relationships between the characters morph and blur, as reality and fiction blend together.
The film stars Aubrey Plaza, Christopher Abbott, and Sarah Gadon. “Black Bear” is written and directed by Lawrence Michael Levine. The filmmaker previously helmed the features “Wild Canaries” and “Gabi on the Roof in July.”
“Black Bear” premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. And in our review from a screening at the event, we pointed out the three leads’ “incredible showcases” and said, “Unique and unfazed, hilarious yet philosophical, ‘Black Bear’ is the comedic form reinvented and re-conformed to mad and intoxicating ends.”

“Black Bear” is set to arrive on December 4. You can watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
At a remote lake house, a filmmaker named Allison (Aubrey Plaza) arrives to play house guest to a troubled couple (Christopher Abbott and Sarah Gadon), who have eschewed their life in the city after inheriting a family retreat. Battling writer’s block, Allison sparks a calculated game of desire and jealousy in pursuit of a new work that blurs the boundaries of autobiography and invention. BLACK BEAR explores the complex nature of relationships, gender dynamics, and the erratic nature of love as it traces the conflict between our lust and our longing for internal harmony.
