By this point, there probably isn’t a person on the planet that hasn’t seen Marvel Studios’ massive hit “Black Panther.” The film, which debuted in February, was nothing short of a worldwide phenomenon earning more than $1.3 billion at the box office. And now, in honor of Giving Tuesday, Marvel Studios and director Ryan Coogler want to give everyone one more chance to see the film on the big screen. This time, for free.
To kick off the Giving Tuesday campaign for “Black Panther,” Marvel Studios released a new trailer for the promotion. Unlike previous trailers for the film, which focused on the plot and action, the new look at “Black Panther” focused on the culture and message of world peace that the film promotes. Yes, you still get to see the stand-up-and-cheer moments such as the famous “Wakanda forever!” However, it’s clear that Marvel Studios wants you to listen to T’Chaka’s words more than his fists.
And since it’s Giving Tuesday, fans across the country will get a chance to see “Black Panther” for free at select non-profit arthouse theaters. If you’re lucky enough to attend a free screening of the massive superhero spectacle, then you should stick around after the credits roll for a new, live-streamed Q&A featuring the writer-director Ryan Coogler. The screening and Q&A are courtesy of Film Comment.
Now, in addition to giving away a chance to see the film on the big screen, it’s clear that Marvel Studios is using this as part of its awards season push for “Black Panther.” Without the luxury of a recent release date shared by films like “A Star is Born” and “Green Book,” the superhero film has to use this time to re-emerge after months of being out of theaters. And with free screenings like this, “Black Panther” is easily making its mark and joining the Oscar conversation.
