It’s going to be a very busy year for Marvel fans. The comic book studio has three big films coming across the next twelve months including the lighter “The Ant-Man And The Wasp,” and the absolutely gargantuan and heavy “Avengers: Infinity War.” But starting it all off is next month’s “Black Panther,” and it’s increasingly looking like another welcome stylistic and tonal shift from the Marvel playbook we’ve come to know.
Director Ryan Coogler continues his Hollywood rise, following up “Creed” with his biggest movie yet, and it’s certainly looking like he’s putting a lot of personality into the frame. Adding to the film’s flavor is hip hop statesman Kendrick Lamar who is curating and producing Black Panther: The Album with Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith. The journey to Wakanda seems like it’s going to be something interesting at the very least, and hopefully dazzling when it’s all said and done. Here’s the official synopsis:
Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.
Starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis, “Black Panther” opens on February 16th.
