And so the elusive “Black Widow” movie is finally (hopefully) here for real this time, with the rumored hiring of Ned Benson to rewrite a script for the Marvel movie. The film has been rumored to be in the works since 2012 when the Black Widow got a co-starring role in “The Avengers,” yet nothing has ever been for certain until recently.
Since Marvel’s “The Avengers,” DC has come out with their beloved female-centric “Wonder Woman” in 2017, and Marvel has announced “Captain Marvel” will be hitting the big screen in March. It’s a shame those are the only two female-centric superhero films we can think of this decade, but hopefully, Marvel is actually seeing the light here and will indeed give our favorite Russian assassin her own film.
Ned Benson is widely known for his directing debut in “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby,” a collection of three films starring Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy. The collection made its rounds on the festival circuit in the early 20teens as each movie came out.
Earlier this year, Marvel reportedly hired him to write the script of the “Black Widow” movie, replacing Jac Schaeffer (“TiMER,” “The Hustle“).
The movie, still in the works and still unannounced, will include Scarlett Johansson, who stuck with the character since the beginning and is one of the few who survived the recent “Avengers” movies. Australian director Cate Shortland (“Lore“) is already attached to the project and Kevin Feige will produce. According to reports, the untitled movie is meant to be a sort of prequel, taking place before the events of “The Avengers.”
As of this moment, both Marvel and Ned Benson have made no comment on their reported collaboration.
