With “Hall Pass” opening this weekend and getting bested by the three-week-old cartoon “Gnomeo And Juliet” it’s further proof that the Farrelly Brothers are no longer the zeitgeist-capturing, filthy-minded comedy directors they once were. For their next project, “The Three Stooges,” the duo are taking on the well-established comedy icons and bringing them to the big screen in what should (hopefully) be a change of pace. However, percolating in the background is a sequel to the film that help put the directors on the map over a decade ago.
Moviehole reports that during press rounds in Australia for “Hall Pass” Bobby Farrelly revealed that a follow-up to “Dumb & Dumber” is in the cards. “[Dumb and Dumber] has run a bunch of times on TV in the states, and kids will come up and they’ll be able to quote lines from that – lines that I’ve long forgotten. If we could get those two guys back together, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels that might be a worthwhile sequel – and that ball is in motion. We’re starting to think about what those two dimwits would be doing twenty years later in life, and hopefully we’ll be able to come up with something worthy of a sequel.”
Of course, this is very early going but with Carrey originally lined up for ‘Stooges’ and having previously re-teamed with the helmers for “My, Myself & Irene” another collaboration isn’t out of the question, and Jeff Daniels has spoken fondly of the part for years. But this is probably a long, long way off from happening and is also contingent on Carrey and Daniels reprising their roles. At least we hope. Everyone learned from the mistakes of “Dumb & Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd” right? (Though, in their defence, the Farrellys had nothing to do it with that).
