You can’t win four Oscars in one year, including the first Best Picture win for a Korean-language film, without people dying to find out what you got coming next. And that’s exactly what filmmaker Bong Joon Ho has been figuring out for over a year now since “Parasite” shocked the world in 2020. Well, never one to make things easier on himself, Bong has not only been writing one script and trying to get that finished, but he’s also simultaneously writing a second script. And it appears that process is really taking its toll on the award-winning filmmaker.

Speaking on The Director’s Cut podcast, where he was interviewed by Rian Johnson, Bong Joon Ho explained the issues with writing two scripts at once, one in Korean and one in English. And judging by how he describes it, it doesn’t seem like the type of challenge that many people should tackle. That said, at least he’s done with one of them, right?
“It feels like I’m splitting my brain in half left and right writing these two scripts. But I finished one last week,” said Bong about his simultaneous script writing.
While the details of either script are unknown at this time, over the past couple of years, the filmmaker has revealed bits and pieces about what fans can expect. We know that one of the films, according to a Variety interview, is Korean and has “unique elements of horror and action.” The other film is an English-language feature that is a drama that is based on a true event from 2016 that takes place “half in the UK and half in the US.” He also describes both as the same scale as his Oscar-winning “Parasite” and his 2009 feature, “Mother.”
However, knowing that Bong has finished one of the scripts doesn’t mean that we have a timetable for when production on the film might begin and, eventually, when it might be released in theaters. Of course, at least knowing that one of them is finished gives us hope that more Bong Joon Ho goodness could be around the corner, and we won’t have to wait too much longer before news begins to trickle out about what we might expect.
Until then, why not watch “Parasite” again or check out the recent Criterion release for “Memories of Murder” for your Bong Joon Ho fix?
