In light of the passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman, talk of box office seems a bit superficial at this point, so we’ll keep things a bit brief.
Super Bowl weekend generally isn’t considered a hot one, so no surprise that business was a bit muted. Audiences stuck with what they knew, awarding “Ride Along” the top spot for the third week in a row, with the movie now in striking distance of $100 million domestic. Speaking of which, “The Wolf Of Wall Street” hung on top ten just enough to cross $100 million, making it the fourth film in Martin Scorsese‘s career to do so. Also leaping into that territory is “Lone Survivor” which added slightly over 120 theaters this weekend.
Meanwhile, the newcomers to the chart didn’t fare so well. “That Awkward Moment” awkwardly opened at number three, behind “Ride Along” and “Frozen.” The Disney animated movie is continuing to power along, with a total right now of over $360 million domestic, another $500 million in change internationally, with the big one billion looking very likely.
Jason Reitman‘s peach pie drama “Labor Day” baked rather unremarkably in seventh place. Opening on over 2,500 screens, the movie took in a rather slim $5.3 million. Full chart below.
