The influence of David Lynch over Werner Herzog’s murderous horror film “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done,” seems to be tangible. Herzog might be directing, but the casting choices seem right out of a Lynch movie (he’s the executive producer of the project).
Not only has Willem Dafoe (“Wild At Heart”) and Lynch regular Grace Zabriskie already joined the cast, but three new actors have been announced including Lynch mainstay Brad Dourif (“Dune,” “Blue Velvet”) and Michael Pena and Bill Cobbs.
The rest of the cast is rounded out by Michael Shannon, Chloe Sevigny and odd cult figure Udo Kier who surprisingly has never appeared in a Lynch film (does that not seem wrong??).
Even moreso than “Rescue Dawn” with Christian Bale and Steve Zahn, ‘My Son’ is looking like Herzog’s most mainstream project to date, but then again with he and Lynch working together, this might end up being one weird ass movie. We’ve described the details of the film many times so go here for more.
Oh and PS, it looks like Herzog has written a book called, “The Conquest of the Useless,” and its subtitle tells all about it’s subject: “Reflections on the Making of ‘Fitzcarraldo’.” Anyone who’s read even one feature on Herzog or seen the amazing Les Blank documentary, “Burden Of Dreams,” knows making that film almost drove the German director mad. It’s a must-see, as is the Klaus Kinski/Werner Herzog love/hate documentary, “My Best Fiend” (Kinski also starred in “Fitzcarraldo”).
