Earlier today, we reported that “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan was returning to the world that he masterminded to tell a new story in a film (or limited series) that will begin shooting soon. At the time, all we knew was the story is a standalone “Breaking Bad” tale that could be a film or maybe just a limited series. Oh, and it’s going to film in New Mexico, naturally. But now, we have some more information, and it appears that Gilligan is ready to give fans what they’ve been dying to see since the series finale.
Slash Film is reporting that the upcoming “Breaking Bad” project, covertly titled “Greenbrier,” is going to be an immediate sequel to “Breaking Bad” and will star none other than Jesse Pinkman himself, Aaron Paul. This means that fans will finally see what happened to Jesse after the (very) bloody end to the story.
This is confirmed by Bryan Cranston, who was interviewed on the “Dan Patrick Show,” and said, “Yes, there appears to be a movie version of ‘Breaking Bad’ but I honestly haven’t even read the script.”
He went on and said, “I have not gotten the script. I have not read the script. There’s a question of whether or not we’ll even see Walter White in this movie.” Cranston confirms, however, that he has spoken to Gilligan about the project, but doesn’t know if he’s going to be involved. That being said, he would rejoin the story in a heartbeat.
“If Vince Gilligan asked me to do it, then sure, absolutely,” Cranston admits. He goes on to hint at the direction of the film, saying, “This idea, from what I’m told, gets into those, at least a couple of the characters that were not completed as far as their journey.”
For those that didn’t watch the final season of “Breaking Bad,” then you missed out on some of the best TV of the last decade. The series finale from 2013 featured the character of Jesse Pinkman being saved from a group of neo-Nazis that wanted him to share the coveted blue meth recipe that he and Walter White (Cranston) famously developed. He was tortured and tormented, while being held hostage. That is, until White came to his rescue and wiped out the neo-Nazis using some good ol’ fashioned science (and bullets).
Ultimately, the series ended with Walter White succumbing to his injuries from that battle and Jesse driving off into the sunset, so to speak.
Slash Film says that the new film will pick up directly from that moment. And when the original report said that “Greenbrier” followed a kidnapped man and “his quest for freedom,” the report says that the kidnapped man is Aaron Paul’s Jesse character. Specifically, the report says, “the kidnapped man is Jesse Pinkman and the movie will follow his escape from Albuquerque following the bloody events of the series finale.”
We have yet to hear anything official about the project, but one can assume that Gilligan, AMC, and the rest of those folks involved will have to make an announcement at some point soon. Filming is set to begin later this month and go until February.
