“The Mummy” star Brendan Fraser has been having a bit of a career resurgence on the TV side of things lately. After strong performances in Showtime’s “The Affair,” Audience Network’s “Condor,” and most recently, in the John Paul Getty FX limited series “Trust,” the actor has now landed a starring role as a superhero, of sorts, in the upcoming DC Universe series “Doom Patrol.”
Now, for those hoping to see Fraser put on a cape and some spandex and be all Superman-ish, we’re sorry to report that the hero the actor will play is not your typical superhero. In fact, if you’re familiar with the DC comic book series “Doom Patrol,” then you know that none of the characters are what you’d call “normal.” According to Deadline, Fraser has signed on to play Robotman in the upcoming streaming series.

Robotman, as you might imagine, is a robot with a human brain. After race car driver Cliff Steele is almost killed in a driving accident, his brain is put in the body of a robot, thanks to scientist Dr. Niles Caulder. From there, he becomes the hero with the unimaginative name, Robotman. Considering that his body is that of a robot, Fraser will be doing voiceover work for the character, while also playing Steele in flashbacks.
“Doom Patrol” tells the story of a group of outcast heroes that don’t have the conventional powers and superstar status among the DC universe. They band together to tackle some of the more odd and unexpected corners of the superhero world. Fraser joins the cast that includes Diane Guerrero as Crazy Jane, April Bowlby as Elasti-Woman, and Joivan Wade as Cyborg. Wade takes on the role that was recently seen portrayed by Ray Fisher in the big-screen “Justice League.” Still to be cast are Caulder and Negative Man.
There’s no release date yet, as the DC Universe streaming service hasn’t even launched. However, the series will join a variety of already-announced live-action superhero shows, including the controversial “Titans.”
