'Broad City' To End After Upcoming Fifth Season

The adventures of Abbi and Ilana on Comedy Central’sBroad City” are coming to an end after the upcoming fifth season.

According to a report on Deadline, the hit series is going to wrap up after the upcoming season, which is scheduled to air in 2019. However, that doesn’t mean the end of the relationship between stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer and Comedy Central.

Today, the network also announced a brand new first-look deal with the duo, which would allow Comedy Central first dibs on any upcoming projects. That means Jacobson and Glazer will be sticking around Comedy Central developing new series. But enough about the future, right now the big news is the end of “Broad City.”

Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer talked about the end of the series, and said, “’Broad City’ has been our baby and first love for almost 10 years, since we started as a web series. It’s been a phenomenal experience, and we’ve put ourselves into it completely. ‘Broad City’s’ always had a spontaneous pace and feeling, and ending after season five honors that spirit. We are very excited to bring new voices and points of view to Comedy Central and continue our collaboration together in new ways.”

But how did the ending of the series come about? Kent Alterman, President of Comedy Central, said, “It’s purely driven by creative storytelling. They came to us and said, ‘We think that we need to figure out how to resolve a final season.’ They have great ideas about how they want to end it, and the last thing we want to do is to have someone not end something on their terms.”

As of now, we don’t have any specific plot points for the final season. However, we recently spoke to Jacobson who told us, “Last season we leaned into it becoming more serialized… and in [season] 5 we’ve expanded on that, which is exciting for us to do. We’re going to go back to summer, which is exciting to do because winter wasn’t the most fun temperature-wise. I can’t give away much because there are still rewrites to be done but we have a bunch of guest stars in mind.”

No specific air date is known at this time, but the fifth and final season of “Broad City” will air sometime in 2019.
