There is a point in Giuseppe Capotondi’s film, “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” where the film turns from what seems to be a tale of a torrid romance between an American woman and an ambitious art critic into a thriller/heist film about priceless art. And that shift in tone and plot is perfectly shown in the new trailer for the film.

As mentioned, “The Burnt Orange Heresy” is a film that follows an art critic that finds himself in a brand-new love affair that quickly gets interrupted by an art dealer and the quest to steal a priceless painting from a reclusive artist. From there, as you might imagine, chaos ensues.
The film stars Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki, Mick Jagger, and Donald Sutherland. “The Burnt Orange Heresy” is directed by Giuseppe Capotondi, who is probably best known for his film “The Double Hour” and his recent work as a director on the series “The Berlin Station.’
We reviewed the film after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. In our review, we said, “[Screenwriter] Scott B. Smith’s adaptation of the 1971 Charles Williford novel of the same name plays like a cool, classy ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ for the art-obsessive, every trace of camp traded for poetry.”
“The Burnt Orange Heresy” arrives in theaters, courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics, on March 6.
Here’s the synopsis:
Charming and ambitious art critic James Figueras (Claes Bang) has fallen from grace. He spends his days in Milan lecturing witless tourists about art history. His only glimmer of hope is a new-found love interest, the enigmatic American, Berenice (Elizabeth Debicki). An opportunity strikes when he is contacted by wealthy art dealer Joseph Cassidy (Mick Jagger), who summons James to his villa on Lake Como and asks him to steal a painting from the legendary reclusive artist Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland). Soon, James’ greed and ambition get the better of him, and he finds himself caught in a web of his own making.
