Cahiers du Cinéma’s Best Of The Decade Includes Films From Lars Von Trier, David Lynch, Leos Carax & More

As we each and every year, December usually features us highlighting some of the biggest top 10 lists that are released. And Cahiers du Cinéma’s list of Best Films is always one that we pay attention to, giving us a good snapshot of what European critics tend to think about cinema. However, this year is a little different, with folks releasing the Best of the Decade lists, and the French outlet didn’t disappoint, with a high-quality list of films.

Now, the #1 choice might be something worth debating, as “Twin Peaks: The Return” doesn’t normally fit the mold of traditional cinema. In fact, in our Best of the 2010s lists, we had the David Lynch sequel series as our #1, but on the TV list, not films. Either way, that’s a very deserving pick, if you want to consider the director’s work as just an extended film.

The rest of the choices most definitely fall under the “film” category, but probably aren’t works that you might think right away when you consider the best of the last 10 years. While great films, “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives” (directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul), “Li’l Quinquin” (directed by Bruno Dumont), and “Melancholia” (directed by Lars von Trier) aren’t necessarily works that anyone besides hardcore cinephiles will likely choose.

And when you look at any Best Of list, the mixture of films that are beloved and well-known with some wildcard choices is always respected and admired. So, in that case, we can’t help but applaud Cahiers du Cinéma for providing a Best of the 2010s film list that is one of the very best you’ll see.

Gotta wonder why they left off “Avengers: Endgame” though. Clearly, that’s a mistake.
