'Call Me By Your Name' Director Talks Sequel Plans

There are films that lend themselves to sequels. A Marvel movie is bound to have a sequel because they’re always more story to tell with the heroes. “The Godfather” is a rare film that actually had a sequel that was even better than the original. However, for many films, the story begins and ends, with no clear sequel in mind. If you watched “Call Me By Your Name” and thought it fit in with that latter category, then you’re probably going to be confused. You see, director Luca Guadagnino is moving forward with plans for a sequel to the Oscar-nominated film.

We won’t spoil the ending of the film, but suffice to say, “Call Me By Your Name” didn’t end in a way that was clearly setting up for a sequel. Yet, Guadagnino not only has the story in mind, but genuinely seems excited by the prospect of revisiting the characters.

“I’m already conceiving the story with André Aciman, and it’s gonna happen five or six years afterwards,” Guadagnino said to USA Today on the Oscars red carpet. “It’s gonna be a new movie, a different tone.”

André Aciman is the author of the novel that the acclaimed film was based on. The idea that Guadagnino is working directly with the creator of the characters does lend a little bit of hope that this sequel could, possibly, not be a total trainwreck. But then again, there’s always the possibility that lightning can’t strike twice, and for every “The Godfather 2,” there’s a thousand “Jaws 2.”

However, there’s also the news that stars Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet will return for the eventual sequel, but with a completely new setting. “They’re gonna go around the world,” the director said.

We have to admit, the idea of this creative team getting back together to explore more stories with these characters is exciting in theory. The talent alone makes you think they will make a decent film, at the very least.

There’s just so must Hollywood history that says this is just a bad, bad idea.
