We’ve seen horror films from the perspective of webcam chats before, famously in “Unfriended” and most recently, the amazing “Searching.” However, with the latest Netflix movie “Cam,” the perspective isn’t just webcam chats, but instead the business of women using their webcams to earn money.
As seen in the new trailer, “Cam” tells the story of a young camgirl that is rising in the ranks of her website’s channels. However, after being unable to log-in to her account, she notices that an imposter has hijacked her account and using it for their own gain. From there, things get really weird, as the film turns into a bit of a horror-thriller.

Blumhouse Productions, the studio behind “Get Out,” “Happy Death Day,” and “Split,” among many, many more, is responsible for the film. “Cam” premiered at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival and was a fixture among the fall film festival circuit.
We were lucky enough to see the film at Fantasia, and our review called the film “a mysterious dive into the unknown, a dreamy and surreal take on social networking that will make you think twice about not just webcamming, but what someone’s self-worth, and their own identity, might really mean online.”
“Cam” stars Madeline Brewer (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Patch Darragh (“The First Purge”), Melora Walters (“Venom”), and Devin Druid (“13 Reasons Why”). The film comes from the first-time director Daniel Goldhaber and is written by Isa Mazzei.
“Cam” will be available on Netflix on November 16.
Here’s the synopsis:
CAM is a technology-driven psychological thriller set in the world of webcam porn. It follows Alice (Brewer), an ambitious camgirl, who wakes up one day to discover she’s been replaced on her show with an exact replica of herself. As this copy begins to push the boundaries of Alice’s internet identity, the control that Alice has over her life, and the men in it, vanishes. While she struggles to regain what she’s lost, she slowly finds herself drawn back to her show and to the mysterious person who has taken her place.
